It is at this time of year that we tend to reflect on the year gone by, and I am personally so very grateful to have met some very special people, both clients and Therapists who have touched and helped me in so many ways.

I owe particular thanks to the one and only New York City Hypnotist, Marc Carlin, who has helped organise some great Seminars in the States and co- authored our book ‘The Virtual Gastric Band Workbook’, Leslie McIntosh in Canada for showing me the wonderful sights of Vancouver and making it such a memorable trip and Antoine Matarasso ‘down under‘ in Australia for two amazing visits, and to all the Hypnotherapists I have met a long the way who are really making such a difference to so many peoples lives. 2011 for me can only be described as a ‘Journey’ because I seem to have made so many of them. I certainly know Manchester airport like the back of my hand!

2012 promises to be even more exciting as I continue with my personal mission to help more people to benefit from this powerful tool of ‘Hypnosis’, to raise the awareness of Hypnotherapy as a credible therapy and to make it made available to more people through the NHS in the UK.

Clinical Trials are due to commence early February as Ethical Approval is now in place, and data gathering from Therapists will begin in January. I am also pleased to announce that the Practitioner Forum will be officially opened on 5th January 2012! For those of you who signed up for this, I very much look forward to offering further support and ideas with all of you on there. Marc and I are also planning a number of Teleseminars to help you along the way.

In my New Year newsletter I will finally lift the shrouds of secrecy, and share it with you with an opportunity for you to also help more people.

I've recently read a very good article on The Queen of Cougar Website about the benefits of my Virtual Gastric Band in America.

"Shelia Granger in the U.K. has performed a study showing a 95% success rate for her lap band hypnosis procedure and the Shirran’s report indicates a 74% success rate for their GmB method in Europe.
In an independent study I conducted with 10 participants during the very difficult and challenging holiday season (usually the most difficult time to lose weight for most people) using Virtual Gastric Band therapies achieved an average weight loss of 6.5 pounds during a three week period. These results are right in line with other studies conducted in the U.S."

I've been fortunate enough to have been asked to speak in Germany towards the end of the year where fortunately I will have an assistant coach acting as translator for me.

It just goes to show that all over the world, people are becoming increasingly disillusioned with weight loss products and diets that just don't work. This is why the Virtual Gastric Band has been so successful and why it continues to attract interest.

Hypnotherapy proves vital support in natural childbirth

Further to my last post, I've been featured in www.hu17.net all about the benefits of of Hypnotherapy for birthing and especially the recent arrival I mentioned.

There is nothing magical or mystical about hypnotherapy, instead it engages the brain during a time of need when the mind needs to focus on getting through a potentially traumatic event. It is ideal for childbirth and a couple can be hypnotised together for added support when the labour pains intensify. I am really proud of Laura, she was able to have the delivery she had chosen and what an achievement to deliver without pain relief.

In a recent article in the Daily Mirror, Miriam Stoppard wrote an article explaining exactly what Hypnotherapy is:

"Rather than putting people into a deep trance, hypnotherapy works on the theory that when you’re deeply relaxed you’re susceptible to suggestions that can help you do something positive, like giving up smoking or overcoming a phobia.

A hypnotherapist will teach you how to get into this state of deep relaxation through breathing techniques. Once there, you can use visualisation to help you achieve your aim, like flying without fear.

You need five or six sessions to help you learn these techniques."

It's good to see a major UK Newspaper explaining in the simplest of terms what we, as Hypnotherapists, are trying to achieve. In my opinion, Hypnotherapy is the safest method of losing weight on a long-term permanent basis and studies of my Virtual Gastric Band have demonstrated a 95% success rate.

I have just returned from Australia where I spoke at several seminars on the success of my Virtual Gastric Band therapy.

This proved to be a really successful trip and rose awareness of the therapy to such an extent that we were even featured in the Australian press. You can read all about it in these clippings from the Melbourne Observer.

Train to be a Hypnotherapist

Having worked as an investigator with the Department for Work and Pensions for 25 years and ready for a new challenge, I eventually became interested in the ‘mind and body’ connection following a personal illness that proved to be one of life's turning points..

What started out as a hobby quickly became a viable business and I am now furtunate to be based in a GP surgery.

Having delivered workshops both in the UK and on an International scale (teaching the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma and the Virtual Gastric Band workshop) I've met people from all walks of life. Many travel to the clinic from all over the UK, with most referrals received via word-of-mouth and local GPs.

I really believe that Hypnotherapy can make a positive difference to all of our lives and that's why I want to share knowledge of what I have learnt; understanding and enthusiasm for ‘making a difference’ with others who may also have the desire to do the same and help others or indeed to help themselves.

Therefore I'm running some training courses (fully validated by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council) to enable as many people as possible to train to be a Clinical Hypnotherapist.

Do Men not recognise the risks of being overweight?

Too many men are failing to recognise the health risks of being overweight, according to Men's Health Forum chief executive Peter Baker.

He says that by not acting to tackle the problem, the NHS is making "a rod for its own back".

Women face a lot of cultural pressure to be slim. This is largely not because of health concerns and can sometimes to quite have tragic consequences. It does mean though, that many women often have a good understanding of the factors that affect their weight.

The majority of men on the other hand, appear are not to be as bothered about their weight as they maybe should should be. Neither are health services.

A significantly greater proportion of men are overweight or obese (66% of men compared with 57% of women).

NHS Gastric Bypass

There has been an interesting article this week by the mens' magazine QETY about Gastric Bypass Operations that don't go quite according to plan.

The article is very short, but it does include a photo of the after effects of a gastric band bypass operation ...... it's not a pretty sight, trust me.

Yet it just goes to show what people are prepared to go through in order to lose weight, especially after they have tried weight loss programmes and diets that have yielded poor results.

Maybe this is the reason that more and more people are turning to Hypnotherapy to achieve results without surgery or yo-yo dieting. At the end of the day, using a virtual weight loss hypnotherapy service is a viable alternative (without the pain) of having gastric band surgery.

As a hypnotist offering a gastric band surgery alternative I've seen the joy and freedom experienced by people who have struggled to maintain their preferred shape and size.

Spiders, snakes, claps of thunder — we can have phobias about anything.

But new research has revealed that while they often run in families, that’s not because we genetically inherit them, but because we learn them from our parents.

As a clinical practitioner who’s worked in the field for 20 years, I’m not at all surprised by the new research. We learn so much from our parents; why not our phobias, too?

But, actually, it’s more complicated than scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersey, who conducted the study, have suggested.

As a toddler, if your mother screamed the first time you proudly showed her the spider you’d just found, her behaviour certainly primed you to find spiders frightening, too.

Let me introduce myself. I am a Hypnotherapist, just like you. I am based in a Doctors surgery in East Yorkshire. I currently see on average 35-50 clients per week for my weight control system that incorporates a Virtual Gastric Band. I have proved the system in trials and most recently delivered the system in the USA. My website details all the media attention that I have received because of this. Since July, a Washington State University doctoral student and an education professor have treated more than 30 adults with a form of hypnosis as part of a study to improve the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

PTSD doesn't just affect soldiers. Witnesses to violence, survivors of life-threatening diseases and victims of abuse can have it, too. Many of the study participants underwent severe sexual abuse as children.

Prof. Arreed Barabasz said that while veterans of trauma survived the act -- be it watching a fellow soldier die in Afghanistan or enduring years of sexual abuse -- they will relive and survive it many times in their minds for years to come.

Choice of Colour Affects Hypnotherapy

A new study involving a colour test showed that people who choose positive colours were nine times more likely to respond than those who chose a negative colour or no colour at all.

These findings could be used to predict responders to treatment.

Peter Whorwell worked with a team of researchers from the University of Manchester UK, to carry out the study using a colour chart called the ''Manchester Colour Wheel', which allows patients to choose colours that have previously been defined as positive, neutral or negative.

Paul Wood recently published an interesting article about how Hypnotherapy can improve your health and increase your life....

Adopting a fitter lifestyle with the aid of Hypnotherapy could cease you from throwing away over a 10 years of your life span, as brand-new research shows that the combined effect of some of the most popular vices could be the difference between declining in your 60′s or your 80′s.

A new study, released in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, looked at thousands of adults from across the UK. The researchers tracked the health records of British men and women which had carried out a health survey in the 1980′s, examining to find out how many had died over the next two decades and what they had died off.

The scholars proved that those which withheld all four ‘vices’ had a substantially greater chance of mortality. The ‘vices’ included smoking, drinking above 14 units (women) or 21 units (men) per week, consuming fewer than three portions of fruit and vegetables or carrying out less than two hours of exercise a week.

Afraid of The Dark?

Nearly five million adults in the UK are scared of the dark, a new study has revealed.

Researchers at Warwick Castle questioned 3,000 adults in a specially commissioned survey, and discovered that one in four of them cannot drift off to sleep at night unless they leave a bedside light on.

The thought of coming back to a dark home at night is one that clearly worries a large number of adults, as six out of ten of admit to leaving a light switched on when they go out.

Of the adults who admitted to being scared of the dark, 10% of them said the fears dated back to their childhood. Warwick Castle's general manager, Tim Harrison-Jones, said he understood why a child might fear the dark but admitted he was surprised to find how many adults still fear gloomy surroundings.

"It's surprising how many adults harbour this secret fear," The Mirror quoted Mr Harrison-Jones as saying.

"If you are one of those people, perhaps it's not a good idea to watch a horror film before bed," he added.

NHS spend £50m on Slimming Pills

A dramatic rise in the number of patients being prescribed slimming pills, has left the NHS with a bill of nearly £50 million.

The number of prescriptions for Orlistat, one of the most popular slimming drugs recently broke the million mark for the first time. The cost of the prescription drug, which stops the body absorbing fat has soared to £35.7 million which is three quarters of the all of the money spent by the NHS on anti-obesity drugs.

As reported by the Daily Mail in 2009 alone the NHS spent £47 million on drugs similar to Orlistat, which is a 13 per cent rise on spending in 2008 and a huge 55 per cent increase since 2005.

At present it is estimated that 30,000 people die every year in the UK because of their obesity. The total cost of fat related illness to the NHS is thought to have cost more than £4 billion, which has left many people arguing that those suffering with obesity should find alternative ways to lose weight which is not at the tax payers expense.

Tony Parsons: NHS Gastric Band Disaster

Here is Journalist and Author Tony Parsons reaction to the news that a man is attempting to sue the NHS following his gastric band operation:

A man who lost 12 stone after having a gastric band fitted is to sue the NHS.

Good luck to him. I hope he takes them for a fortune.

Some say that Tim Daily, 47, is an embittered, selfish man to sue the cash-strapped NHS.

I say he has every right to be bitter. He may have lost half his body weight thanks to the wonders of a gastric band, but he has also effectively lost his life.

Tim can’t eat. That is the grotesque reality of a gastric band. After having his gut strangled, he can no longer swallow a biscuit without washing it down with morphine. He can’t work. His wife is his full-time carer. His life is a misery.

Over the last ten years, almost 5,000 people have had gastric bands fitted on the NHS. A total waste of public money. That is the real obscenity.

A gastric band is not a diet aid. It is an act of self-mutilation.

You should not be able to get self-mutilation on the NHS.

Hypnosis to Beat Breast Cancer Pain

Hypnosis could ease the pain of breast cancer. U.S. studies show that women with breast cancer which had spread to other parts of the body experienced significantly less pain if they underwent regular bouts of hypnosis.

In the latest study involving 124 women, half were given regular hypnosis as part of group therapy sessions. Their pain levels were then monitored for a year.
Although the therapy did not reduce the frequency of their pain, it did ease discomfort when it struck.

Around 40,000 women a year in Britain are diagnosed with breast cancer. If the tumour becomes metastatic, which means it has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body such as the bones or liver, some patients can experience significant pain.

It’s believed hypnosis works by altering pain perception. You have to pay attention to pain for it to hurt, so inducing hypnotic relaxation transforms perception in parts of the body, or directs attention elsewhere.

Children's Hospital to Use Hypnosis

The Juliana children's hospital in The Hague is to start using hypnosis in an effort to reduce pain, stress and fear among patients, the AD reports on Monday.

Hypnosis will only be used if children and parents agree to the treatment but doctor Madelon Ruige told the paper children are receptive to the idea.

Amsterdam's Slotervaart hospital occasionally uses hypnosis, which led to questions in parliament last year.

The paper says hospital research carried out in 2007 showed that 85% of children with mysterious stomach pains saw their symptoms clear up with hypnosis. But only 25% of children given medicine got better.

Drug addiction is one of the most troubling social problems of our times. It is a habit that is really difficult to break from. Even though we have rehabilitation and detox centers that can help treat addicts, another strategy being used to help those with this problem is group hypnosis.

Group hypnosis is not too different from individual hypnosis because the therapist will assist and guide the addicts to the same stages of hypnosis. Hypnosis for Arachnophobia

A zoo farm manager will be using hypnotherapy to treat her severe arachnophobia.

Getting the job as the manager of Wheelgate Adventure Park was a dream come true for 25 year old Sarah Hagger, but she is continuing to struggle with the large hairy spiders that live at the park.

"I was so excited when I was offered the job as zoo-farm manager. I need to be able to assist my staff fully and suffering from arachnophobia is a major problem for me," she said.
